demons.jpgLynda Barry’s One Hundred Demons originated as a painting exercise inspired by a 16th century Japanese scroll, but the result is thoroughly contemporary. Her comic-style drawings depict vingettes from her youth, hilarious and tragic, poignant and sweet. Family relationships, friends, boyfriends and pets are all painted in deceptively broad strokes and the results made me laugh, cry and squirm with sympathetic shame and discomfort. This book would make a fantastic gift for anyone who has ever been an adolescent girl.
