We had a big day today. We picked up Eric and went to lunch at Sonny’s Pizza (yum!) – a San Clemente institution. Then Calvin and I went for a walk on the beach trail near Eric’s work. We walked from North Beach to the San Clemente Pier and back. It was such a beautiful day! Usually at this time of year I’m happier if it’s cold and rainy – we don’t get much in the way of seasons in Orange County, but I enjoy what little weather we do experience. Right now, though, I’m grateful for the unseasonably warm temperatures we’re having, since it makes it so much easier to take Calvin out and get some exercise and fresh air.

After the beach we headed over to my mom’s and Calvin spent some time with his cousins.

He was very cooperative and actually woke up while we were there, so the kids got to interact with him a bit. The boys asked if they could pet him, which I thought was pretty funny. I guess a baby and a puppy aren’t that much different to young kids!

We’ve had beautiful weather this week, which has made it much easier and nicer to get out and about with the boy. On Monday we met my friend Erin and her son Jude at Dana Point Harbor and had a lovely walk. Unfortunately, I was too busy talking to take any pictures! Yesterday we met some friends for lunch and then went to the library where I work so Calvin could meet some of my co-workers. Here’s Calvin (trust me, he’s in the stroller) surrounded by his admiring public:

Incidentally, I don’t think I ever posted pictures from my work shower back in November, and I’m not going to right now because they have mysteriously disappeared from my computer. However, here’s reason #813 why I love working in a library:

Along with a lot of other wonderful gifts, my co-workers gave us a bunch of great books to start Calvin’s own library. How cool is that?

Anyway, Calvin does great in the car and the stroller, which makes it so much easier to take him out. I’ve been really fortunate to be able to get out of the house almost every day for the past couple of weeks, and it’s been an enjoyable experience every time.

And, just to prove that he doesn’t sleep ALL the time, here’s a picture of Calvin alert and happy:

I just love that little face!

Calvin at 3 weeks old:

407110On a tip from my mother-in-law, I bought a bottle of Shout Advanced Gel. It’s amazing stuff! Works great on all the baby-related stains that we now have in our laundry, but you don’t have to be a parent to appreciate it. It removed a set-in grease stain on one of my t-shirts that had been treated with other stain removers and washed several times without success. I never thought I’d be so excited about a laundry product!

I finally broke out the stroller yesterday and took Calvin for a walk. My goal is to do this every day, weather permitting, so that I get some exercise and avoid cabin fever. After that, we went to Grandma’s and Calvin got to meet some of his cousins (they were sick when he was born, so he just saw them yesterday for the first time).

This week, Calvin also had a visit from my friend Julie and met my Uncle Rick. Coming up in February we’ll have visits from my sister and Eric’s parents – we can’t wait to see them!

As of yesterday, Calvin is two weeks old. I can hardly believe it – the time is flying by. He’s doing great. He’s getting into more of a nighttime routine so we are getting a bit more sleep, and that makes everything much easier.

Today he had a visit from Kelly and Melissa and thoroughly enjoyed the attention.

We’ve been having gorgeous weather all week, so today Calvin and I met Eric for lunch – we got some Chinese takeout and had a little picnic in the park. As you can see, Calvin was unimpressed by the experience.

Eric’s back at work this week and Calvin and I have been doing pretty well on our own so far – since he sleeps away a lot of the day, it’s not too taxing and I have been able to catch up on some rest and get a few things done here and there, although today I was in my bathrobe until 1:00 when my mom came over and entertained the boy while I took a shower. It’s kind-of nice not having any commitments or anywhere I have to be that requires, you know, getting dressed.

We did make a trip to the pediatrician this afternoon, for Calvin’s 2-week appointment (got to get in when you can). At 11 days old, Calvin is already up to 9 lbs. 1 oz. from his birth weight of 7 lbs. 15 oz. He is really packing on the weight! I like his new doctor a lot (we liked the doctor he saw in the hospital, but she’s too far away to make her our regular pediatrician). The new doc came highly recommended and I felt very comfortable with her. She’s really happy with Calvin’s progress and spent a good amount of time with me, just talking and answering my questions. I didn’t feel like she was rushing through the appointment – she really listened and gave me some very helpful advice. Anyway, I was expecting to have to shop around a bit to find a doctor we really like, but I think we may have found a winner on the first try. What a relief!

I’m taking a short break from baby blogging today because it’s our twelfth anniversary. I don’t have time to write everything I’d like to and Eric would probably prefer that I don’t anyway, but I will say that I am so glad to celebrate the day that I married this man:

This past week has given me more reason than ever to be grateful to him and for him. He’s a wonderful father and husband and friend. Happy Anniversary, Eric!

Calvin is a week old already – I can hardly believe it! To celebrate, we took him to breakfast at the Ramos House in San Juan Capistrano. It’s one of our favorite places, but we rarely go there anymore because on weekends they only offer a fixed price brunch which is really pricey and too much food. But since we were both home on Friday…

Anyway, it took us nearly two hours to get out the door but we had a lovely meal and Calvin was very cooperative and slept through the whole thing.

Here you see two toasty marshmallows: Calvin and the one on my hot chocolate. Yummy!
